Columbia
Community
Columbia is a planned community in Howard County, Maryland. The creator and developer, James W. Rouse, designed Columbia to eliminate the inconveniences of the current subdivision design. The population of Columbia is about 95,000, making it the larges unincorporated community in Maryland.
Columbia has a small town feel, which is attributed to The Village Concept. Each village is comprised of several neighborhodds, all of the villages contain a shopping center, community center, recreational facilities, bike and walking paths and homes. Four of the villages have their own interfaith center. An interfaith center is a common worship facility, which is owned and operated by a variety of religious congregations.
Most of the neighborhoods in Columbia contain single family homes, townhomes, condos and apartments. In 2006, Money Magazine ranked Columbia, together with Ellicott City, #4 out of the 100 Best Places to live in the United States.
