Germantown is situated 30 miles to the northwest of Washington,D.C.,and is 50 miles or so to the west of Baltimore, Maryland. History of Germantown
In the early 1800s, a large number of German business owners, some of whom were from Germany and others from Pennsylvania, established a settlement in what is now Germantown, Maryland. While most of ofthe local land owners and farmers were English, travelers remembering the accents of the shop owners called the area Germantown.

Germantown sits close to Interstate 270 and is a stop on the MARC commuter train's Brunswick Line. The Montgomery County public bus system, Ride On, serves Germantown with approximately 20 bus routes, and operates a major transit hub at Germantown Transit Center. Additionally, a light rail system has been proposed which, when completed, will connect the terminal of the Washington Metro Red Line at Shady Grove Station in Gaithersburg to Germantown and continue on to Clarksburg, Maryland, which is north of Germantown.
